I was in a production years ago and the characters of Christopher Wren and Miss Casewell were pretty definitely played as gay, or as gay as possible within the time period. In fact, Christopher is actually the subject of some thinly veiled threats by Giles, due to Giles' thinking that he's gay. It's so odd because, later on, Giles seems to suspect Mollie of having an affair with Christopher. It's kind of a flaw in the writing, because Giles really can't have it both ways. We never did find a way to justify any of that...the actor playing Giles made the decision to play him as a sort of hot head who would come out with anything without thinking about it. If I remember correctly, there are a lot of flaws in the writing that have to be papered over by quick pacing and good performances...if the audience gets to think about any of it too long, none of it makes any sense.
