At the moment, Portland belongs to them, Chicago might be next, and Trump does have his sights set on New York. Quite terrifying, honestly. I fear we're in that hazy area where this may be moving off topic, but this is where it becomes important, to point to elsewhere in this discussion, about how these new stories are being shaped through the lens of the Hysterical News Industry*. So far, we've heard on this thread of significant but contained instances of violence and harassments in two geographic locations, but the story being told to much of America is "New York is violent! It's lawless! The liberals can't govern!", which then invites them to believe that only a militarized unit like the Border Patrol can control the problem by turning New York into Baghdad.
And that is a bigger problem for Broadway than Covid-19. In a way, I've come around to agreeing with Teacher64 on the basic issue, but I take a very different interpretation with me.
*to point to the news story shared about fires being set along 42nd Street, which sounds very dramatic but in truth is a garbage can fire in one part of the sidewalk. That's a problem that needs to be addressed, but the storytelling around it makes it sound much more dramatic and out of control. |
