I think we're allowed to have complicated feelings about this - it doesn't have to be a binary. We can acknowledge that the city is utterly failing to serve homeless and mentally ill people (and also acknowledge that many people who are homeless are responsible citizens going through economic crises) while also acknowledging that the city's failures to do so are contributing to highly-localized centers of increased crime, including shootings. And we can acknowledge that these highly-localized centers of crime are easy to cherry pick for the news to create the impression that New York as a whole is going through a period of lawlessness and increased citywide peril, which is not yet happening.

The ABC article did mention gunshot as a man fled at night, which is not something we've seen in that area recently, so I don't think it's a stretch to connect that to the increase in homeless people in an area that was already proximate to the sketchy sections around the Bus Terminal. I think we also have to acknowledge that this is what can happen when the streets become devoid of their usual activity and human presence - especially if people who are sheltering from Covid also begin going out less because they feel unsafe.

It's a very tangled knot.
