PlayPenn has launched a handful of plays that have gone on to prominence in recent years, most notably Oslo and The Whale, but looking over the sum total of plays developed there over the course of fifteen years, I'd say the output of significance is fairly paltry. But as I already said, that's really not the issue at play here. Although -- and this has been buried among the allegations of racism and sexual harassment -- the well-regarded dramaturg Amrita Ramanan (currently director of dramaturgy at Oregon Shakespeare Festival) has publicly alleged that during her brief time as a PlayPenn advisor, Meshejian and Volansky selectively unblinded certain submissions and essentially gamed the selection system. To me, that is a big red flag that throws an asterisk next to everything PlayPenn has ever produced. That should be the focus of its own investigative reporting.
The Inquirer has a new story out today regarding Meshejian and Volansky's dismissals. Linked below. |
