| The production that I did was in the early '90's, so I don't know if they were tweaking the script as early as that, but I distinctly remember the point having come up in a rehearsal, likely because I raised it (I was playing Christopher). I took a quick look around to see if I could find the script and, of course, could not. After Christopher's arrival at Monkswell Manor, Giles has a line to Mollie about how he's assuming that Christopher is "that kind" of person or similar veiled language of the time. Then, later on, Giles wonders if Christopher and Mollie had been involved in the past, prior to their marriage. It's just such a strange turn around for the Giles character. In retrospect, it probably would have helped the actor playing Giles had I not played Christopher so...flamboyantly, I guess. I can't imagine the audience could have taken those lines about a possible Mollie/Christopher relationship very seriously. But then Giles is also the most underwritten character in the play and it can sound like his entire character is made up of lines that needed to be said, but no other character would have said them...so Giles is the random line spouter. |
