The play is indeed terribly hokey but with a well cast, directed and designed production like that one, the audience ate it up and I believe it was a big hit for the theater. My memory is that Wren and Casewell were clearly meant to be presumed gay without undue hamminess from the actors. Casewell was dressed in mannish clothes but that's also part of Christie's plotting.

Of course, in London it's become as much of a tourist attraction as The Tower, Big Ben, The Eye, etc. and probably draws on an audience of tourists who might not see much theater in the West End or otherwise. I would imagine the Christie estate knows that if there were productions in other major cities or a new film it would take away from the mystique and uniqueness of the London production.
