I love how the Jacobean plasterwork ceiling is exaggerated and the pendants are made to look like pawns on an inverted chessboard. Also like the way the perspective of the room sucks you into the center like a trap. Good point about the "ordinary" guest house. The walls below the ceiling show water damage, so it's a guest house in need of funds and perhaps not choosy about its guests.

Alexander Dodge did the designs for the Met's SAMSON ET DELILA which I really enjoyed but other people found over-the-top and tacky. I found it completely appropriate with a rather over-the-top opera. I appreciate Dodge's whimsey. For some reason though it rubbed me the wrong way in GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE... maybe a situation of too much on the mark there.
