Msamati really gets stronger as the play goes on. McKellan and every other Salieri I have seen seemed like a stage manager in Act 2 becoming less interesting and more predicatable as the night goes on. Msamati misses a lot of the charm and humor in Act 1, but I have never seen anyone play Act 2 more compellingly. (And he finds a lot of humor in Act 2) . In Act 2 the character's progression to greater wealth, greater with, and greater corruption is chilling.
And even in Act 1 some things like his manipulation of Constanza land powerfully in Msamati's more earthbound interpretation.
This is the first production I have seen where the "war with god" seemed like a real battle rather than an intellectual concept. |
