| That's also really helpful to hear! I don't want to just come off as critical about the institution. PlayPenn is a great company artistically, and they've supported the development of some really beautiful plays and playwrights. They may be overselling their stature to writers eager for entry into the industry, but I think they're unquestionably a necessary space for the future of the American Theater. There are a couple of playwright who developed work there that have written some of my favorite plays, and PlayPenn was meaningful to their growth as artists. Antoinette Nwandu, C.A. Johnson, L Feldman, Jonathan Norton. All great writers, and I don't think PlayPenn has to be "The Best" to be worthwhile. One of the symptoms of our Capitalist system is that it demands a few sterling examples of Winners to reward disproportionately. In truth, once we get out of the altitude of The Lark and O'Neill, I'd say there are at least twenty or thirty different emerging playwright development processes that are equally successful and important to our Artistic Culture, which are all roughly the size of PlayPenn. So picking a third place or a successor to the O'Neill feels like a fool's errand; there isn't anything out there rivals it, and nor should there be. We're better served by the wide diversity of people and platforms that are bringing work to life. |
