Seeing ''Cinderella,'' I was bowled over again by Richard Rodgers' incomparable gift for melody, especially for his whirling waltzes.
I love his ravishing ''Waltz for the Ball.'' Then there's ''Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?'' and my fave, ''Ten Minutes Ago.''
The latter is usually sung a bright and bouncy tune, but the most exquisite version I know is Tom Andersen's.
He slows down the tempo and turns it into a beautiful ballad of such yearning. It's from his debut CD, ''Faraway Places.''
Tom covers another ''Cinderella'' tune on his third CD, ''Who Knows.'' It's ''A Lovely Night,'' sung with guitar and violin, and it's a jazzy gem. |
