I attended a master class with Ms. Cook where she said that during rehearsals for CANDIDE, she asked Leonard Bernstein to include a high note "aaaahhh" after "Born to higher things, here I drop my wings."
Can't verify the truth of it, of course, but she talked about how the dropping of wings naturally lent itself to a glissando.
