All That Chat - MIDSUMMER question

I feel stupid asking this, so please be gentle... In most of the productions of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM that I’ve seen, the lovers (Hermia, Helena, Demetrius and Lysander) end up stripping down to their underwear in the forest or getting their clothing torn off throughout the evening. I never understood why, though. Is there some reference to this in the script? Thank you in advance.
