The Emmy nominations were announced this morning. Of direct relevance to theater, American Son pulled a Leap of Faith move by being nominated for Outstanding Television Movie but not getting nominated in any other category. The Tony Awards ceremony was nominated for Best Variety Special (live) and for Direction and Lighting.

Lots of first-time acting nominees who have appeared on Broadway, including Harriet Walter, Billy Crudup, Cate Blanchett, William Jackson Harper from The Good Place (yay!), Jasmine Cephas Jones, Leslie Odom Jr, Lupita Nyong'o, Jeremy Pope (what a year for him), Corey Hawkins, Kieran Culkin, Andrew Scott, and Anna Kendrick.

And many theater stalwarts like Tony Shalhoub and Billy Porter are back in the fray.

(On a side note, I'm very glad to see first-time nominations for Annie Murphy from Schitt's Creek, Cecily Strong from Saturday Night Live, and D'Arcy Carden from The Good Place, all of whom have been passed over unjustly in prior years. They all have excellent comedic timing, and I would love to see any of them on stage.)
