|It's such a crapshoot and there are tons and tons of Emmy contenders. It's often hard to break through a field of big-name stars.
The real ''Hollywood'' surprise to me was Jeremy Pope, a newbie who got nominated over stars like Russell Crowe and Chris Evans.
As for Patti LuPone, one GoldDerby pundit wondered if she had been submitted for Leading Actress, instead of Supporting Actress.
If so, she was good company of being passed over; so were Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon and 2-time Emmy winner Merritt Wever.
And if LuPone was in Supporting Actress (for Limited Series), all of the 6 current nominees are past Emmy winners: Holland Taylor, Uzo Aduba, Margo Martindale, Tracey Ullman, Toni Collette and Jean Smart. (By contrast, LuPone was an Emmy nominee for Guest Actress in ''Frasier'' in 1998.)
I imagine Parsons and McDermott made the cut (over Mantello) because they're better-known among Emmy voters. Parsons plays the ''evil gay'' in ''Hollywood,'' but it was a showy role, and quite a 180-degree turn from his lovable, nerdy Sheldon in ''Big Bang Theory,'' for which he's won 4 Emmys. And don't forget that Pope was nominated for playing the ''good'' gay black screenwriter in ''Hollywood,'' so maybe it all balances out. ;)
