No, ALW does not say what version

In reply to: Not so fast! ALW says that "The Phantom of the Opera's 'original version' will return to the West End according to co-producer" - barna99 08:30 am EDT 07/30/20

Someone from RUG (the entity that would actually have the ability to make any decisions regarding the show's reopening) did say that, but I don't think anyone believes that. As the article says, more to come.

See the link below, I think it is obvious that ALW wants the original to return and will be a very loud voice pushing for that to happen. I think it will be very sad to lose that version and have any happy memories of seeing the show multiple times when I lived back home in London.

By the way the UK tour swapped back to being the original https://uktour.thephantomoftheopera.com/ after touring the revamped version for a few years.

Not precisely. The tour that opened this year was billed as a "reinvented staging of the original production". As I understand it, it had a slightly smaller cast and a smaller orchestra, and while it looked very similar to the original I believe there were a few simplifications in terms of the set as well. It is not a precise recreation of the original production - or, for that matter, of the original touring production.

In 30+ years I have never met a creator who wanted their show to close or downsize. The point here is that the best observation is that of Glinda (or Gandalf).

Right now, no one knows what path(s) will be possible back to a new normal. ALW is suffering from confusion about what is/will be possible henceforth, steeped in a political philosophy based on the primacy of his making money irrespective of the cost to producers much less the health of potential audiences.

I am pretty sure ALW does not manage nor have the producing rights to PHANTOM - that is all managed with Cameron Mackintosh's offices (as was CATS).

ALW would have to strike a deal and have RUG take over the rights in order to restore the show in full if Cameron decides not to.

Right?

I'm pretty sure Really Useful Group and Cameron Mackintosh are both producers of Phantom.

I am aware they are both producers but Cameron's office controls all of the marketing/casting/operations of the show. RUG does not so would have to likely work out a deal to keep the show going if Cameron decides to pull his resources.

You are correct, but if I recall reading in one of the articles about this correctly, Her Majesty's is on load to ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER's company, not Cameron, so Webber really would be a gate keeper to whatever gets to that stage....

Very good point - while I always remember that ALW and CM are producers in their own right, I tend to forget that they are both theatre owners as well.

1. CLEARLY I meant "loan" and not "load".
2. Yes.. I think that is where it will be telling, and interesting to watch what unfolds. They formally closed the production entity, so a return to Her Majesty's would require the consent of Lloyd Webber, even if Cameron retains all rights outright. If it were to be announced in another theatre, we would have all of the required answers there.

It has been interesting to watch this unfold on the UK theatre chat boards, where the Phantom Phans are unleashing a bit of hell. Their revolts against the 2020 UK Tour and the World Tour for having ANY differences to the West End staging are striking... and the contempt that some of them seem to even have for the Broadway production under the tight supervision of Prince not being allowed the free reign of the London staging... "How dare you change the show from the original? But how dare you make it 100% Hal Prince's?"

(The 2020 UK Tour does retain the original staging - with allowances, as expected - but with fewer actors. That will undoubtedly find its way into the West End version to be greeted by Phans chaining themselves to the door. I wonder if a similar path will be taken in New York.)

"The 2020 UK Tour does retain the original staging - with allowances, as expected - but with fewer actors."

Fewer actors, and significantly fewer musicians - and while it's far from my favourite show, with THIS music that's a very big deal. Particularly since I don't imagine the ticket prices will be going down.

You are correct.

I DO try to distinguish between tours and sit downs when discussing things like that, so I didn't want to touch the topic in my original post.

If Phantom comes back and looks beautiful as ever but the technology is newer and affordable and efficient to run, resulting in a more streamlined crew and there are several fewer actors in stage... well, I wouldn't complain a lick. If a wagon is a foot smaller, I won't be bothered. If the descending Angel goes away and is replaced by an upstage Angel set piece like I on the world tour, I will notice and I will miss the effect if I see the show, but it won't shatter me. If they cleverly cut three musicians, I might notice - but West End is more free with digital augmentation and it can be well done.

If the Chandelier doesn't flicker and rise at the overture and then fall and crash to the stage - or it does so at a MORE comically slow pace or the orchestration is significantly reduced and notably canned, THAT would be a death knell.

RUG is a producer but I think it is fairly well established that CM controls the production. To answer the previous question, if CM were to let the rights lapse (seems beyond unlikely) they would revert to ALW. They could also work something out in which ALW assumes the financial burden of doing what he wants (which also seems unlikely). My guess, however, is that this is just the ramblings of a confused old white man with an unfortunate predisposition.
