Is Nathan ever described as Jewish in the libretto to Guys and Dolls? Did Damon Runyon ever say that he was? Sam Levene was Jewish and brought his ethnicity to the role to great effect, but I'm not so sure this is essential to the character. I could see finding it essential to Tevye or Fanny Brice, but not Nathan Detroit.

Sam Levene had appeared as another Runyon character, Horsethief, in the the film version of Runyon's The Big Street. Nicely-Nicely Johnson (played by Eugene Pallette) is a character in the film as well.

Next: Of course Nathan Detroit is Jewish. And Henry Higgins isn't. (nm) - BwyDan 03:04 pm EDT 08/02/20
