| I'm going to assume that the photo that accompanies the linked article is a stock photo rather than one taken at the Lincoln Center Archives. Films stored as haphazardly as they are in that photograph would deteriorate quite rapidly. Broadway World should have given this a little more thought before publishing because I know for a fact that the Lincoln Center Archives give their treasures on film a great deal of care to preserve them. | |

| I work at the Performing Arts Library, specifically with the TOFT archive. Thanks for pointing this out -- yes, that's a stock photo. The actual TOFT vault looks nothing like that, and I can promise you there is no film dangling from metal cans! | |

| Yes, and it's a recent change. If the researcher holds a valid, up-to-date New York Public Library card, we no longer ask about the specific research purpose for viewing a video. (Needless to add, this doesn't apply now that the building is closed to the public, but this change was made shortly before the shutdown.) The unions agreed to it, so that rule has been relaxed. However, some videos are still restricted and need permission in advance prior to viewing, and those restrictions still apply. | |

| Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the monitors on which these treasures are watched. I've heard on this forum that there is an attempt to get funding to replace them, but as of now, they're about the quality of watching VHS on a TV in the 1990s. | |

| I didn’t think anyone can walk in and watch one. A person has to have a legit reason like an actor or director that is going into a production. I sure many lie to see what they want. | |

| It does appear that they changed their policy. The whole "having to have a reason" to do the research was a little silly, since no credentials were required. Anyone could say they were writing about a specific production....and how could anyone at the library say you were lying? |

| Will look forward to this branch of the NYPL reopening, & will be curious to see what safety protocols are put into place for those viewing booths...a lot of sanitizing will need to be done of headsets, etc. Visited a number of times to watch acting teachers in past productions, & indeed found it curious how it was never enough to give that as my reason for wanting to view the work, a much more pedantic reason was necessary, so am glad in some ways the restrictions are looser. This is wonderful news about some of the work being shown in schools! And the article is correct re union rules...interned years ago on a production which could have been a valuable part of the collection, but for one actor who refused to allow her work to be filmed. | |
