She may well be joking, or playing a game, with the knights playing along -- but even if that's true, the fact remains that severe injury or death is highly likely to happen during a joust, defined as "a sports contest in which two opponents on horseback fight with lances." In fact, I would say it's fairly unlikely that anyone could participate in a joust without serious injury, at least. That's why I find the song so hard to take. If Guenevere were to joke about the knights besting and humiliating Lancelot at arm wrestling, that would be a different matter :-) "Besides, why wouldn't she be going to the fair with her husband the King?" Well, that's an excellent question, and I would say one more reason why the song should be cut :-) |
