If I recall correctly, this production opened the current Playwrights Horizons complex. I remember it being beautifully designed -- the setting was a Belle Epoque salon in a Paris home -- and containing some lovely music, but that it was rather lifeless onstage. The cast was indeed marvelous. It was my first time hearing Kelli O'Hara and I knew instantly this was a major voice. Emily Skinner stole her few brief scenes, though I believe she missed a number of performances (as was often the case with her at the time).

Regarding Carver, you could tell that his vocal capacity was diminished in comparison to KISS or PARADE. But he was always a brilliant actor and held the stage effectively as the narrator. He had the right haunted quality for the character. It was a masterful performance.

I'm glad the score was preserved, as it was the show's best feature.
