Diana, the musical, to be filmed in an empty theatre
Last Edit: goodfriendnj 04:05 pm EDT 08/11/20

Filmed in an empty theatre, and then later shown on cable.
It's an interesting idea, and points the way to a, hopefully tentative, future of live shows on Broadway.

The musical will be filmed without an audience at the Longacre Theatre, where “Diana” was originally scheduled to open in March 2020. The film is slated to premiere on Netflix in 2021. A Broadway opening is scheduled for May 25, 2021.

Last night America’s got talent did the show with the audience being remote across the country. I
Suppose they could do that for a few hundred to have that live reaction. It seems to work for AGT.

It’s way more likely

That this filming will happen than broadway opening nights happening in May.

The quarantine before filming is tough but not impossible. It’s been done before to varying success. And Netflix has the money to fund those types of costs that other entities may not.

Back in April, I was very positive that this would be gone by now and broadway would start in October. I’m now seeing the light and don’t think it will happen until next fall. Getting a vaccine is only the first step that will take months to implement for large amounts of people to get before groupings. Getting 50 people quarantined a few weeks for filming is a lot more realistic.

But it is not just 50 people, and doing this in a Broadway theatre is on a collision course with the state's very specific rules. E.g., distancing in dressing rooms. Doing this at a studio is (relatively) easy; doing it in the Longacre is not. (Oh, and there are very specific and very limited permitting allowances for trucks, streets, sidewalks, etc built into the rules.)

Re Ann's question about Netflix, I would very much expect that they are paying for the rights, not financing it. (I also expect this will blow through whatever budget is imagined.) And we are not talking Hamilton here.

If all of the people are quarantined and tested, there's no need at all for distancing.

are you under the impression that they are going to quarantine everyone? or just the actors? I am having trouble wrapping my head around the former. And if they are not, then we are talking masks and distancing except on stage. (BTW I don't think the state guidelines contemplate quarantine, though I assume that could be worked out, all things being equal.) But as I said, we shall see.

For the Tyler Perry shoot:

We got [cast and crew] down to 360 people, and we all moved in and we just finished our first television show successfully with no positives throughout the quarantine bubble," he said. The cost: $18 million.

So, filming this wouldn't take as long, and there aren't as many people, but the quarantine I would think would be the same length.

there is mention of performers showing up "camera ready" in the guidelines. I work in advertising & we have actually started small productions again in the state.

Maybe they'll only shoot a few scenes per day?

The article says Netflix film. I only recently got their streaming service and I’m surprised at how much original nextflix series are on there. They could easily afford the few million to do this. Also ryan Murphy is directing the funded Netflix production of Prom so I wouldn’t be surprised if Netflix is expanding into musicals. Ryan Murphy was also going to do Feud with Diana for fx before moving to Netflix so maybe he has something to do with this behind the scenes.

There's a side range of ways Netflix can be doing this, from licensing to fully producing. If they were fully producing, would they film it in a theater?

I can't believe they're that jealous of Disney.

Why so skeptical?

In reply to: A lot of questions remain - ryhog 10:27 am EDT 08/12/20

Most major news outlets are now reporting it, so I’m sure everything you’re apparently worried about has been not only taken into account but already approved.

Besides there’s already a template for this: earlier this summer Tyler Perry already filmed not one but two complete seasons of his currently running TV shows - in one case, filming 22 episodes in 11 days.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/tyler-perry-talks-camp-quarantine-challenges-filming-a-pandemic-1304909

If that could be accomplished with low risk and no outbreaks, then it should be not only plausible but entirely practical (if not exactly simple) for one already-written and largely-rehearsed stage show to pull it off.

I watched a televised piece on the Tyler Perry thing and it wasn't an easy thing, and seemed very expensive (like the NBA example). Not sure that's practical.

It very well may happen, but taking things into account doesn't mean it will work. It does give them good publicity, though, and maybe that's worth it.

Of course, it only takes one person to ruin the whole thing.

Instinct I guess; I certainly don't know. AEA has been mentioned but what about the other unions? Are we quarantining stagehands, dressers, makeup, camera people and all the other film production types, etc etc? Have they all signed off on this? Knowing the lead producers, I am not ready to assume everything has been done and that they have not just jumped the gun. Finally, there is a huge difference in filming Tyler Perry and a Broadway musical in an ancient theatre with everything in close quarters. So yes for now I want to be skeptical. Maybe they will prove me wrong and everyone can remind me when it wraps. :-)

published on a website that has no track record for such things

no indication the unions have approved this

no indication the state or city has approved this

also note:

the idea of a bubble or quanantine is implausible

that picture is not actually related to this in any way

never say never but count me skeptical.

Why implausible? I know of one theatre company who did live streams of summer shows where the cast was quarantined beforehand. It's not "implausible" - it just has to be agreed to and carefully thought through.

It's implausible in that if it hasn't been happening for a couple weeks already, word would have leaked out.

There's a hotel right next door and easily another dozen within a block (admittedly less bubbly), so if they wanted to create a bubble in sight of the theatre they could.

The NBA did it. But it takes about 6 weeks to pull off and you need to put each cast and crew member in hotels rooms where they don't interact with anyone for 14 days and meals are left for them at their door. And you have to provide safe transportation. Like I said, the NBA pulled it off but they had a closed off campus at Disney and it took awhile to create and it was insanely expensive.

Are they writing it off as a stage piece (its prospects for success never seemed great), and will simply make it a cable presentation? Brings back memories of direct-to-video movies.

If the cast is tested and put in a bubble during filming like the NBA is doing then it’s perfectly safe. It’s when you introduce outside factors that it’s a problem.

NBA has done amazing job. You have to test every actor and crew member for 2 weeks though. And then the people that test positive have to quarantine for 14 days and can't come back til they have three negatives. So it would take at least a month or more to create that bubble. And during that six weeks you have to put all the crew and actors in separate hotel rooms and pay for that. It would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for the house alone.

I hear the show is good though. My brother and his wife raved about it when they saw it in San Diego.
