“DIANA”
A NEW MUSICAL
WILL PREMIERE ON NETFLIX
AHEAD OF ITS
2021 BROADWAY OPENING

BROADWAY OPENING NIGHT SET FOR MAY 25, 2021

New York, NY (August 12, 2020) – Producers Grove Entertainment (Beth Williams), Frank Marshall and The Araca Group announced today that Diana A New Musical will premiere on Netflix next year ahead of the Broadway opening. Diana, the upcoming new musical, currently on hiatus due to Covid-19, began previews on Monday, March 2, 2020, and was scheduled to open on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, at the Longacre Theatre on Broadway. The musical is now set to open on Broadway on Tuesday, May 25, 2021.

In a joint statement, the Diana producers said, “We speak for the entire company when we say that we couldn’t be more excited to finally be able share our show with theater lovers everywhere. Though there is no substitute for the live theater, we are honored to be a part of the quality entertainment that Netflix provides its subscribers worldwide.”

Diana, directed by Christopher Ashley, will be filmed without an audience on the stage of the Longacre Theater and will feature the original Broadway cast including Jeanna de Waal as “Diana”, Roe Hartrampf as “Prince Charles”, Erin Davie as “Camilla Parker Bowles”, and two-time Tony Award® winner Judy Kaye as “Queen Elizabeth”. The producers have worked closely with Actor’s Equity Association on all protocols.

The complete cast of Diana includes Zach Adkins, Tessa Alves, Ashley Andrews, Austen Danielle Bohmer, Holly Ann Butler, Stephen Carrasco, Bruce Dow, Richard Gatta, Lauren E.J. Hamilton, Emma Hearn, Shaye B. Hopkins, Andre Jordan, Gareth Keegan, Nathan Lucrezio, Tom?s Matos, Chris Medlin, Laura Stracko, and Bethany Ann Tesarck.

Diana brings us face-to-face with one of the 20th century’s most compelling figures in this landmark musical event. The musical has book & lyrics by Tony Award winner Joe DiPietro and music & lyrics by Tony Award winner David Bryan (the same writing team behind the Tony Award-winning musical Memphis), with direction by Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley (Come From Away), choreography by Olivier Award® winner and Tony Award nominee Kelly Devine (Come From Away) and features an epic and sweeping contemporary score with music supervision and arrangements by Olivier Award winner Ian Eisendrath (Come From Away).

Let's hope it's not the usual hagiography that most often chronicles her life. nmi

They're taking a gamble. We've just seen HAMILTON on our TVS. if DIANA isnt a heck of a lot better than reports from its La Jolla tryout, they could kill there show, as LEGALLY BLONDE on MTC did.

That was MTV, right? I don't recall that "killing" Legally Blonde.

Personally, though, I would have liked to have killed that audience - who seemed (to me anyway) to think THEY were the show. :-(

I don't think there is anything alive that could be killed. Unlike Legally Blonde, which had a Broadway pedigree, this show does not. It has not opened. They have no choice but to say it is going to open. Otherwise they cannot call it a Broadway show; the best they could do would be to call it a show that likely would have opened had it not been for the pandemic. It's marketing reality, not reality reality.

Apparently, it underwent vast changes from the La Jolla production, but here’s a review of what I saw.

I’m surprised Six isn’t being done.

Seems a lot easier with six singers and a band and support staff.

Didn’t they do a taping of six in London? Is that going to be released?

I haven't seen either show, but from what I know of them, it seems like Six would be much diminished by not having a live audience present for any taping.

Netflix also has coming up Season Four of "The Crown," in which Diana is introduced. So that was likely an added incentive for Netflix to pick up the musical.
