So young, only 64.

I feel like we're missing a lot here these days.

His talent was evident to all of us. What was less evident was that he was a friend to the young and inexperienced; someone who knew how to gently guide. Talent may be in your DNA, but that kind of grace says even more about a person.

He was the lighting designer for a production of BABES IN ARMS that I was in at the Guthrie Theatre in 1996. Cast included Kristin Chenoweth, Kevin Cahoon, and Erin Dilly. I thought it was so cool to be in a show with a Broadway lighting designer. There was talk of us moving to Broadway but it never happened. He was a nice guy. 64 is too young.

Here's a video message from Howell from May of this year congratulating the Eastern Carolina University class of 2020. He comes across as a very lovely and friendly person. May he rest in peace.

He worked a good deal in San Diego, particularly at La Jolla Playhouse. My theatre friends who knew him are posting about how friendly he was to all he met. He did quite a bit of fabulous work. So sorry to see him pass.

Bill, in San Diego
