WHOREHOUSE GOES PUBLIC - prerecorded audience enthusiasm?

In one of the reviews for the original production of WHOREHOUSE GOES PUBLIC a critic (can't remember which) subtly speculated that in a desperate attempt to subliminally make audiences think they were having a great time the usually tepid audience response after numbers was actually sweetened with canned applause sent to speakers throughout the house. Anyone know if that could be true?

Edit: I originally posted this message thinking the show in questions was LEGS DIAMOND.

I remember going to Disneyworld during the one of the recessions a while back and went to the show where they were doing the "Honey, I Shrunk the Audience" attraction which had many interactive elements to make you laugh, scream, etc. Unlike my past visits where the theater was nearly filled with a thousand or so people, there were maybe 100 of us. It was so clear that the "audience reaction" was coming almost completely from the speakers piping it in! Nothing you'd ever notice in a mostly full house but so obvious in a sparse one.

There were definitely speakers all over the house broadcasting casino noises of various kinds during the half-hour before the show. Very annoying. Gave me a headache before the show even started. So I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they also broadcast applause and/or laughter when called for. I just thought the entire show was vulgar and crude.

Perhaps off-subject. On a trip to Las Vegas, locals especially cab drivers, were extolling the impressionist Danny Gans. We went. A sparse house. A few of the impressions were very good; others seemed to just rip-off the subjects material. "If...you know you're a redneck." [This was some years ago.] Early during the show, I thought, the laughter and applause was really "hot" for this small an audience and this early in the show. I looked around and...couldn't see anyone much who was laughing or applauding. Disgusting.

Thanks for this story. I don't know if you're aware of this, but Danny Gans did a very brief run on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre from November 8 through 12, 1995. (I believe it was only scheduled for that brief a run, for obvious reasons.) I saw the show and I remember enjoying it for what it was.
