Mary Martin/Robert Preston Interview
Posted by: raydan 11:39 am EDT 08/17/20

I was listening to Sirius Broadway when ‘My Cup Runneth Over’ played which spurred me to see if there was an online live performance by Martin and Preston. Other than the 1967 Tony Awards clip on YouTube, there isn’t.

But what I did find was this great short interview from 1968 with Dallas/Ft Worth NBC celebrity interviewer, Bobbie Wygant. Dallas was one of the tour cities they played after a year in NYC.

By the way, Bobbie is still in the area and is also Betty Buckley’s godmother.

Enjoy!

I was fortunate to see them when the tour stopped in Kansas City, MO when I was a student at KU. A group of us drove over. It was an extraordinary evening of theater. Two masters of their craft at the top of their game. One of my fondest theater going memories.

Even when Mary Martin wasn't touring in musicals, she traveled as the spokeswoman for her line of sheets which Martin designed.

After her husband died. I saw her at a Philadelphia Department Store around 1980.

I was impressed by her energy and efforts to talk with everyone who came to see her. I understood why Ms. Martin almost never missed a performance on stage.
