What's the point of this?

In reply to: The 74th Annual Tony Awards Will Take Place Digitally In Fall 2020 - Official_Press_Release 11:22 am EDT 08/21/20

No one can see any of the winning shows or performances for the foreseeable future and who wants to win a Tony award in their living room?

Why give our actual competitive awards when they could just put together a special with Broadway performances, etc.

Not sure what the point here is.

and who wants to win a Tony award in their living room?

I'd be happy to. Or, in my kitchen, on my deck, in my bathroom...wherever they want to present it. :-)

"who wants to win a Tony award in their living room?"

I don't understand the concept of this question. You must not work in the arts.

If I had a choice between winning a Tony in my living room or not winning one... I wouldn't for even a split second not want to win it in my living room.

Not everyone who works in the arts cares about awards. I mean, who actually got into theater because they wanted to win a trophy? It's all subjective. If you want to win something meaningful, play a sport. You actually compete in that.

I didn't say they/we all care about awards (a very cynical way to read my post, but maybe I left it too much to interpretation). What i mean is that a Tony can change your entire life and career in a very big and positive way. Why would anyone who would have happily been nominated and potentially won, and participated in this awards ceremony/show any other year now just NOT want to because if they won they'd be accepting it from their living room due to a pandemic forcing us to distance?
It makes no sense.

I'd tune in to see Ms. Smith win in her living room. And I'm not even certain she'll win.

She'll be 90 in November. She may not have another opportunity.

(She lost for both Buried Child and Grapes of Wrath, startling. I saw both.)

If they pick single winners, my guesses for the winners would be:

Production:
Moulin Rouge
The Inheritance
A Soldier's Play

Acting:
Aaron Tveit
Adrienne Warren
Danny Burstein
Lauren Patten

Paul Hilton
Lois Smith

For all of the above, I think the only potential realistic alternatives would be Jagged Little Pill for Best Musical, Slave Play for Best Play, and David Alan Grier for A Soldier's Play. I think the others are heavy favorites.

I personally thought that David Alan Grier was fine but not particularly special, but he and Hilton were both nominated for both the Outer Critics Circle and the Drama Desks in this category, so apparently, others feel he gave an award-worthy performance.

The play Leading categories are much trickier. Leading Actor could be Tom Hiddleston or Kyle Soller. (I would personally give the award to Ian Barford, but he won't win.) My guess for Leading Actress is Joaquina Kalukango, with Laura Linney also a possibility. I think Mary-Louise Parker's likely tour de force next season in How I Learned to Drive, combined with her prior win, might affect her chances this season.

The point is to draw a line under the 2019-2020 season. Have the Tonys - and those shows that win have promo to use when they re-start. The bigger question is when will the next Tonys be? GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY, MRS DOUBTFIRE, SIX, LEHMAN TRILOGY, and WEST SIDE STORY will all be eligible in the following season. So if Broadway actually opens this spring, they may take all the April May openings, comboine them with these 5 shows, and have Tonys for those. And then be back on schedule .... we'll see

Even if you add music man and a few others. And I doubt broadway will start in March at this point. WSS had begun opened for around a month with almost 2 months of previews. It should compete this season.

Yes you read that right. I doubt broadway will be up and running until late next year at this point. Hurd immunity won’t be practicable until next summer if a vaccine is available Jan 1. So adding more shows to the ones already opened wouldn’t happen until late next year. Why should 2019 shows, actors and creatives compete 3 years later. If I were eligible, I’d want to compete now and get the award instead of competing with fresh shows and my work forgotten.

How are they competing? The shows are't playing. Voters aren't attending. This awards event on an unknown platform will pay tribute to some shows and actors but no one is competing cuz they aren't working at all.

In reply to: re: I’m sure winners want it now instead of June 2022 - KingSpeed 11:57 pm EDT 08/22/20

Isn’t it still competing in categories in the spring? Of course it is. And voters needed to see the show in The fall before it closed. The same standards are there especially cutting out WSS and North country which probably opened too soon to have voters see it post opening. Pretty much every show competing opened in the fall and voters should have seen it.

I think it would be very unfair to have the shows and potential nominees compete in 2022 especially plays like inheritance and slave play which closed on their own and not shutdown by pandemic. They would not have been up and running in May 2020 or 2022.

Marketing

In reply to: What's the point of this? - charles1055 12:18 pm EDT 08/21/20

I said this until I felt like a broken record back in the early days of the pandemic. The awards are about marketing; everything else is window dressing. Properties needed and now have an opportunity to market. When people will see shows is irrelevant: unless a producer wants to dump their show in the trash bin, they want it out there, and this is their chance. Do you think a show that closed on Broadway in '19 will get airtime in the non-foreseeable future? Now or never.

Why awards and not just performances? People (especially Americans) thrive on competition. Think of it as a game show. Think of it as a rigged game show if you want.

Finally, who wants an award in their living room? Anyone who wins one. That's a no-brainer LOL.

I never swore up and down that it would never happen. I said there was no reason to do it and that there was nothing to market. I still think it has nothing to do with marketing. It’s a chance to offer closure and recognition for the partial season. Most of the honored shows probably won’t return if/when Broadway returns next year. Also- I doubt enough people will watch these awards for it to have any impact. It’s just a chance to give someone like Danny Burstein a Tony Award and I’m all for that.

In reply to: re: Marketing - KingSpeed 05:57 pm EDT 08/22/20

First of all, I have no recollection of what you have posted in the past. S/F apparently has a memory that can run circles around mine. :-) TBH with few exceptions I tend to pay attention to what is said, not who said it.

I'm a little unclear on what you are saying now. Do you seriously think that producers are spending millions of dollars on these two shows (this one and the NBC) for closure or to give Danny Burstein or some other actor a trophy? The notion that "it has nothing to do with marketing" is both factually incorrect and painfully naive. So I am wondering if that's really what you meant or were you perhaps simply saying that you think they are wasting the money by marketing shows that (you don't think) will come back (or have some other life). That is something I would not agree with, but it is not an unreasonable argument.

The "nothing" that is being marketed by all this has several components. First, folks think they can raise the future profile of their shows. Second, they think they can monetize awards if they win them. (And in this regard note that a later combined awards for '19-'21 would translate into half as many awards, and if there is one thing we know about people, it is that they love winning awards.) Third, there is the matter of the broader brand, i.e., Live Broadway. Folks are scared shitless that all of this online stuff is helping people forget why they ever paid hundreds of dollars to sit in cramped seats to watch shows. I guarantee you that you will hear that sales pitch on these shows. I know we debate this "effect" here (and maybe you are a part of that too, I don't recall), but there is no debate that there are many producers and landlords who think this is cause for concern.

There is nothing to pitch? There is no live theater and won't be for a long time. How does a digital zoom-like awards show get people excited about seeing live theater?

I don't know. I think it's very wishful that someone seeing Danny Burstein win a Tony award for Moulin Rouge in October is going to remember to buy a ticket to Moulin Rouge months (potentially years) later.

That's not even getting into whether the show will still be there; the theatre will still be a theatre; and who the heck is going to have money for food (let alone theatre) if/when this pandemic ends.

Wonder if Scott Rudin, who owes Spotco $6 million plus, requested this because WEST SIDE STORY opened on February 20, and he wants WSS to be in the next group ... I'm willing to be you that cut off for the NEXT Tonys will before May 20. That way WEST SIDE STORY will be competing in a short season so that WSS and MUSIC MAN are competing in different seasons. In the next Tonys WSS will be up against at least COMPANY and CAROLINE OR CHANGE ... tough competition for Ivo Side Story.

I'm personally a bit skeptical that Music Man is starting up on the currently anticipated date, which is April 7 for first preview. Rehearsals would have to be for several weeks before then.

I don't think any Broadway musical is going to be up and running by then.

It's from the Times article, which has expanded since I first saw it a few hours ago.

"Twenty plays and musicals opened on Broadway during the abbreviated 2019-20 season, but only the 18 shows that opened before Feb. 19 will be eligible for Tony Awards. A revival of “West Side Story” that opened Feb. 20 and the new musical “Girl From the North Country,” which opened March 5, will not be eligible because too few nominators and voters saw them before Broadway shut down March 12."
