It does depend on the show, though - and there's no guarantee that what you get from a company like RMS are the ORIGINAL sounds.

It also depends on the difference between synth technology when the show was produced, and what it is now. And also there may be such specifics with the original programming that it can't really be replicated reliably to be used by others with probably much lesser setups.

But back to the original question - NO - the leasing companies are NOT technically obligated to provide any programming work at all - and for many shows, that's still the case.

Many professional regional companies either do their synth programming in-house, or rent show specific packages from third party vendors. Some non-union tours have also gone out in physical replicas of their Broadway stagings and new (and often simpler) keyboard programming.
