I'm only half kidding, since I knew they'd start from scratch to attain verisimilitude. But the wall to wall red on stage was hard to sit with for an entire evening, and did nothing to capture the era. Or suggest the protagonist's life. These stills look very much like the flavor of the original (and still remarkably wonderful) movie. N.B. I was not a big fan of the Parsons Michael at the Booth -- he seemed one-note, and not always an interesting one, as perfectly cast as he was -- but suspect his performance for the camera might be far better.

I rather liked the set for the stage revival. I'm a former director, and what interests me most in a set is not the decor but how it can be used by the actors. I was very curious how Mantello and his collaborators would handle the ground plan, since it isn't so easy to provide realistically plausible positioning for the large cast of this play. Mantello's solution was to center everything around that phone table, which I thought worked splendidly. And I had no problem watching all the red for the length of the play.
