Variety dished with Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss, who've won several Emmys for their Tonycasts, about producing the Democratic Convention.

Kirshner and Weiss described the various tricky and technical challenges of pulling it off. They're also asked about the upcoming 2020 digital Tonys.

Weiss: ''I’m just not sure of anything more than an announcement at this moment. I will say this though, Ricky and I do TV all the time, but the Tonys is a really unique thing that we’ve been really honored to be a part of, going on 20 years at this point. Everybody who makes the Tonys possible is part of a community that’s entirely shut down. Our industry, television, has continued. Theater has not. I can’t even begin to tell you the internal sorrow over the fact that so many people that we know, and I’m not just talking actors and directors and choreographers, I’m talking all the way down the line, nobody’s working right now, because they can’t. We want to do whatever we can to help make that better in any way we can.''

It's impressive that they were making some of the major decisions pretty close to the event. Having such an experienced team really helps. I noticed that they responded to the comments that Kamala Harris's setting emphasized her solitude and made her seem small, and they did a much tighter shot with Biden without the views showing no one else was around. I think Biden's setup was much better.

I haven't seen a listed TV director for the Republican convention this week. It will be interesting to see how it compares.

Two producers of "The Apprentice" are involved, I believe. One of them was a judge at the Miss Universe Pageant which is an important skill to have in the court of a king who craves pageantry.

Check out the Miss Universe Russia stage design in the linked NYT's article. The "It's a Small World" style set is... it is what it is.

They could use that same set this evening!
