I'm surprised that Ms. Erivo's name is not already publicly attached to the project. There's no way in hell there's anyone better on the planet to play that role right now.

- GMB, who absolutely considers it one of the best live performances he's ever seen

The producers are probably still in negotiations with her. She's a bigger name now than she was when she played the role on stage and her agent probably also realizes the very thing you've pointed out about how there's no one better to do this. And I can't imagine the producers even gave a thought to doing this movie without her. So...they're probably going to have to pay her more than her current going rate for movies.

Erivo may also have other contractual demands to be negotiated that wouldn't have even been a thought several years ago.

I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

It gains them nothing by announcing her attachment in the same press release. If they do it in two, with a bit a time between, they get two news cycles and two bursts of excitement, and gives the project the perception of momentum (either accurate or manipulated, either way it's good for getting the movie seen as a legit thing).

Will this be how Cynthia Erivo gets her EGOT?

If Erivo's cast in the movie musical of ''The Color Purple'' and wins the Oscar, she completes her EGOT.

Ditto, if Ben Platt's cast in the movie musical of ''Dear Evan Hansen'' and wins the Oscar, he completes his EGOT.

Winning the EGOT - top awards in 4 different media: TV, recording, film, theater - usually involves different artistic properties.

But Erivo and Platt could complete their EGOT with the same role. Has that ever been done before? Who gets their EGOT first?

(Erivo and Platt got their Tony for Broadway; their Grammy for the cast album; their Emmy for a TV appearance plugging their show.)

That's never been done before. Here are the 16 EGOT winners:

Richard Rodgers
Helen Hayes
Rita Moreno
John Gielgud
Audrey Hepburn
Marvin Hamlisch
Jonathan Tunick
Mel Brooks
Mike Nichols
Whoopie Goldberg
Scott Rudin
Robert Lopez
John Legend
Andrew Lloyd Webber
Tim Rice
Alan Menken

If you include honorary awards, there are 5 more:

Barbra Streisand
Liza Minnelli
James Earl Jones
Harry Belafonte
Quincy Jones

It is surprising that the 9 winners of both Oscar and tony for same part did not win an egot doing it. Helen Mirren has won both by playing the same character (queen Elizabeth II) in different roles.
Link 9 winners for same role.

I know what he means. That’s why I said it’s never happened before.

Yes, that's what I meant: winning the EGOT for the same role.

Erivo and Platt benefitted from timing and recent rule changes that made it easier to reach an EGOT.

Starting 2012, the Grammys allowed the principal artists on a Broadway cast album to be eligible for the prize, too.

Previously, that Grammy for Musical Theater Album went only to the producers and composers.

Starting 2016, the Daytime Emmys gave out a prize for Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program. Primarily, it went to musical artists who appeared on a talk show or morning program (usually to promote their show or CD). A Broadway show won this Emmy 3 out of the 4 times it was awarded: ''Dear Evan Hansen,'' ''The Color Purple'' and ''The Band's Visit.'' This Emmy has since been eliminated.

Needless to say, had these rule changes existed earlier, it's possible others might've completed an EGOT.

I didn’t realize those rule changes existed.

That does explain how someone could win three of the four for one part by winning cast album.

The principal soloist thing has gotten abused at times. Hamilton had 10 principal soloists, including Okeriete Onaodowan. Oak is a great performer, but there is no way he should be a principal soloist. Dear Evan Hansen made every cast member a principal soloist.

As of next year, there can be no more than 4 principal soloists.

Ten performers have won Tonys and Oscars for the same role. Of them, four—Anne Bancroft, Shirley Booth, Paul Scofield, and Viola Davis—have also won an Emmy, but are missing the Grammy.

Of course, under the current ridiculous EMMY rules and the current Grammy rules it is VERY easy to imagine Joel Grey having done it for Cabaret now that principle soloists on cast albums get the Grammy in addition to the producers. And he very likely could have won an Emmy for a performance from Cabaret on a talk show.

The Grammys were pretty lax about defining those ''principal artists'' on a cast album. ''Dear Evan Hansen'' listed 8 performers; ''Hamilton,'' 10.

They seemed to have tightened that: Only 5 ''principal artists'' were listed from ''Hadestown,'' ''Moulin Rouge!,'' ''Ain't Too Proud'' and ''Oklahoma!''

And I'm glad the Daytime Emmys dumped that Musical Performance category. Doing promo on a talk show isn't worthy of TV's highest award.
