| Is 2020 the Tony's worst year for Best Musical (or at least Best Original Score) since 1995? | |

| Looking at the eligibility rulings, unless they decide not to give out the prize, Percy Jackson is the de facto winner for Best Score, which, correct me if I'm wrong, hasn't happened since Sunset Blvd. in 1995. As far as Best Musical, I'm sure some feel that Sunset or other controversial winners like Contact and Fosse were undeserving. But, as a fan of each of those shows (to varying degrees), I think this may be the worst year for Best Musical since 1974 when Raisin beat out Over Here! and Seesaw. |

| As others have noted, play scores are eligible (and one of them had better win), so there's more than one eligible score. But there are new provisions since the Sunset Boulevard year so winning by default isn't guaranteed: - if there's only one candidate for any category, the nominating committee may grant a nomination, not that it's automatic - if there are three or fewer candidates for a best show category, there's a yes/no vote on each; no majority "yes", no nomination |

| The Tony rules and regulations also allow for the possibility of a single nomination in a category: ''If the Tony Awards Nominating Committee has determined that there is only one nominee in a category listed in Paragraph 4(a) above, such category shall be submitted to the Tony Voters which may, by the affirmative vote of sixty (60%) percent of the total ballots cast, grant an Award in that category.'' | |

| As I noted in the article I posted today (see thread below), the Best Score category could be populated—should they choose to keep it—with music from straight plays. I believe The Inheritance, Slave Play, The Sound Inside, The Rose Tattoo, Sea Wall/A Life and The Height of the Storm would all be eligible. | |

| Sad, but perhaps cyclical. In 1995, there was one traditional song score: ''Sunset Blvd.'' In 2010, there were two: ''Memphis,'' ''The Addams Family.'' If COVID-19 hadn't cut this season short, the other original song scores would've been: ''Diana,'' ''Flying Over Sunset,'' ''Mrs. Doubtfire'' and ''Six.'' |

|
| You're correct. The last time the Tonys nominated only a single entry for Best Score (and Best Book) was 1995 for ''Sunset Boulevard.'' In 1989, they dropped Best Score (& Book), rather than nominate ''Starmites,'' ''Chu Chem,'' ''Legs Diamond'' and ''Welcome to the Club.'' As for ''worst year for Best Musical,'' that's subjective, but 2020 won't be the first time the Tonys featured a skimpier selection of nominees. 1985: The Tonys dropped the categories of Leading Actor in a Musical, Leading Actress in a Musical and Choreography. 1989: The Tonys had only 3 shows up for Best Musical: ''Jerome Robbins' Broadway,'' ''Black and Blue'' and ''Starmites.'' 1995: The Tonys had only 2 shows up for Best Musical and only 2 women up for Leading Actress in a Musical. (They could've had 4 nominees in the latter category if they included Elaine Stritch from ''Show Boat'' and bumped up Megan Mullally from ''How to Succeed in Business.'') |

| Not much is being said about this show here, but for me it was easily one of the best plays of the season. Did the Tony committee rule it a revival or a new play? In addition, this production of A Christmas Carol had one of the most substantial, evocative musical scores of any play I saw this season. However, some (but not all) of the score was based on traditional Christmas music. Have the Tony people made any sort of ruling on whether its score is eligible? |

| I missed the ruling when it was announced. I assumed it would be regarded as a new play since the book was credited to Jack Thorne and it was such an innovative, new take on Dickens' original. Still, I wasn't sure so I asked. | |

|
| On Jan. 30, 2020, the Tonys ruled that ''A Christmas Carol'' was eligible for Best Play. And that Campbell Scott was eligible for Leading Actor in a Play and that Lizzi Gee would be eligible for Choreography. There was no ruling concerning its music by Christopher Nightingale (which includes Christmas carols), so I'd assume it isn't eligible for Best Score, but the Tonys did rule that Nightingale is eligible for his Orchestrations. | |

| I think it would have been the show to beat this spring and I doubt the doubtfire or six would have done it. Jagged little pill is really the only other contender and that is competing. I think gentleman’s guide vs beautiful was pretty weak year. And last years hadestown was worthy but was tootsie or Beetlejuice or the other 7 really threatening to win As for score, it shouldn’t be given this year unless they want to give it to a play. I saw lightning thief on tour and the score is bad. |

| ...2010, which is when Memphis, Fela, American Idiot and Million Dollar Quartet competed against each other. I didn't think any of those shows were deserving of a win, but Memphis struck me as the weakest. | |

| It took all the devices from Luhrmann's vision and turned them into gimmicks. Aaron sang the part well but failed to connect with every other actor on that stage and didn't capture any of his character's emotion highs or lows. HOWEVER, I may be okay with him winning just because he was so robbed of even a nomination for Next to Normal. | |

| I have to say that seeing it in Boston, I really enjoyed it. I'm not saying it was perfect, but I thought it was a lot better than the mess many of you paint it as. Chacun a son gout, But I would say that Act 3 (i.e. the seemingly endless "megamix") was a big mistake. I understand that they wanted to end on a more up note than Satine's death, but they really overdid it. | |

| I love everything about ''Moulin Rouge!'' : Tveit, Olivo and how Alex Timbers turned it into a lavish stage spectacle and box-office hit. But I agree with you about Tveit being robbed of a Tony nomination for ''Next to Normal.'' He was ''so alive, so alive'' as Gabe. |
