I would expect some of the plays with original music to be nominated.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL -- New Play or Revival? -- Original Score?

Not much is being said about this show here, but for me it was easily one of the best plays of the season. Did the Tony committee rule it a revival or a new play?

In addition, this production of A Christmas Carol had one of the most substantial, evocative musical scores of any play I saw this season. However, some (but not all) of the score was based on traditional Christmas music. Have the Tony people made any sort of ruling on whether its score is eligible?

Why would it be a revival?

I missed the ruling when it was announced. I assumed it would be regarded as a new play since the book was credited to Jack Thorne and it was such an innovative, new take on Dickens' original. Still, I wasn't sure so I asked.

On Jan. 30, 2020, the Tonys ruled that ''A Christmas Carol'' was eligible for Best Play. And that Campbell Scott was eligible for Leading Actor in a Play and that Lizzi Gee would be eligible for Choreography. There was no ruling concerning its music by Christopher Nightingale (which includes Christmas carols), so I'd assume it isn't eligible for Best Score, but the Tonys did rule that Nightingale is eligible for his Orchestrations.
