| its not reall;y bad news is it? Reviews on Broadway were mediocre to negative - why would they be nominated for anything other than maybe a performance? Noth9ng Tony worthy there as far as one can tell. | |

| So I'm a bit confused What does reviews have to do with Tony Awards? I always thought they were awarded for work by your peers. Am I wrong? | |

| In this case, I think by Broadway standards, neither the score nor book were very good. Shows are not (usually) nominated just to fill the largest number of nomination slots possible. I don' believe the score will be nominated, its the only original score, and it could win by default. It brings up an interesting point. There are around 850 voters (i happen to be one). If the score of LIGHTNING THIEF was the sole nominee for best score, let's say it got 60 votes - or even 200 votes - out of 850 voters who saw the show. Would it win the Tony when 650 voters chose not to vote. An interesting question. |

There is no provision for cancelling a result based on a minimum number of votes and it is fairly common that some people do not vote in all categories. I have a friend who frequently does not vote in design categories and another who generally absents himself from the musical categories for lack of interest. As noted in the other post, the gatekeeper is the nom committee. (fwiw i can't imagine them nominating play scores but not the musical score but we shall see.) |

| As I understand the rules, once there are nominees, someone will get an award. Abstentions don't make a difference. Though if there's only one nominee, the category isn't on the general ballot. It wins or doesn't in committee. (And as has been mentioned a couple times, it's not the only eligible score. The category is "score written for the theatre," not "score of a musical.") |
