''The Lightning Thief'' was a young adult musical that belonged more at New World Stages than Broadway, but I hope it's not shut out either.
(Off-Broadway, the Drama Desk nominated it for Best Musical, alongside ''The Band's Visit,'' ''Come From Away'' and ''Hadestown.'')
Chris McCarrell, who played Percy Jackson, deserves to be Tony-nominated alongside Aaron Tveit (''Moulin Rouge!'') for Leading Actor.
And I'd love to see Ryan Knowles recognized for his comic tour de force. He played 9 characters among 25 ''Lightning''-quick changes.
The N.Y. Times and the New Yorker gave him raves, and Knowles stole the show with his hilarious portrayal of Hades (voiced by Paul Lynde!). |
