Oliver over Stop the World is a reasonable choice, both scores stand up well today vis a vis recognizable songs from the scores. Little Me has shown a ton more staying power than it deserves because every 10 years or so an actor with excellent comedic chops wants a go at its 7 juicy roles. The show itself and its score is strictly on the level of many one season hit shows, then they are mostly forgotten. Bravo Giovanni wasn't even that good, although I have to admit I have a weakness for its cast album, call me whatever.
No Strings is one of Richard Rodgers best late period score although it has not proved to have staying power because the story didn't age well and How to Succeed is not top draw Frank Loesser. The score doesn't really pick up full steam until the two 11 o'clock numbers. IMO Happy to Keep His Dinner Warm, Coff Break, Company Way, Rosemary are all not that interesting songs. Here the story carrys weak songs instead of the other way. Just my opinion but I don't think the Tony voters got it totally wrong. |
