| Sondheim's score was not much like at the time - it was his first on Broadway. And Sondheim, in his HAT books, talks about having written a score for the wrong show - he didnt feel his music was right for the show, but it all happened very fast. As far as Broadway knew, Sondheim was a lyricist dabbling in music. FORUM was notable for its book, direction, and performances, but the score was dismissed by many. A FUNNY THING did win the Tony for Best Musical, Best Director, Best Producer of a Musical, Best Book, and also Tonys for Zero Mostel and David Burns. So the Tonys went where they wee deserved. This was 1962. OLIVER! was a great, traditional score back then. FORUM was weird for 1962. | |

| Yeah it's truly mindboggling. I know few scores as funny, funny and tuneful. Bright, silly, lovely, bawdy and smart all at once. And i don't agree with Steve, it does seem very much the right score for the show... i think it works because of how different yet well matched the book and score are, how they balance each other and work together without sacrificing anything, to create a fuller experience a musical than just a zany raunchy farce with disposable songs and serviceable but throw away lyrics... as the show might have had. | |
