She spent a couple of seasons on MADAM SECRETARY as well. I wish she would come back to Broadway when it's possible.

The article you are responding to literally states Sara is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns.

Ramirez also wrote on their Instagram bio that they will be using both she/her and they/them pronouns.

That is correct. Sara uses “she” and “they” pronouns. Not all non-binary people use they/them pronouns exclusively (or at all).

Also, my experience with the few non-binary people I know is that they are usually forgiving if "he" or "she" get used instead of "they" because they understand that even for people in the know, it can take time to adjust to remembering "they" instead of instinctually going for he or she. So it could be that Sara recognizes that as well.

I also find that even those very sensitive to gender issues will still stick to older habits, for instance, addressing a mixed-gender group as "guys." It takes a lot to break old habits, even when we're aware of the issues.

This is partly true, but not a good mindset to hold

This is partially true, but a bad mindset to use

I know a lot of NB people, and a lot of people who exclusively use They/Them pronouns. The community is not a monolith, and not everyone reacts the same to misgendering.

But the vast majority of feedback I’ve heard is that most people will often feel uncomfortable correcting others on their pronouns, especially in the middle of a conversation. And so they will act “understanding” in the moment, but will often feel hurt internally.

And while it can be difficult to get used to new pronouns, and everyone deserves some understanding, there is a right and a wrong to take advantage of that understanding.

Saying “it’s hard to get used to this” should not be carte blanche to use whatever pronouns you want. You have to put in the effort to adjust your behavior, and when you slip up, quickly correct yourself, and move on.

In other words, they may be “understanding,” but only if you correct yourself, and putt in the effort right away, and not making a long-term habit out of using the wrong pronouns.

I’ve heard many NB people say they don’t even want an apology, because this just draws more attention to it, and makes them feel obligated to say “it’s ok” in response.

In my experience, "guys" tends to be acceptable as a gender neutral word.

Not in mine. We have been explicitly instructed to never use "guys" to address anyone, lest it feel alienating to some.

As a native Californian, I'm so used to "guy" and "dude" being used to refer to pretty much anyone that it never would have occurred to me that anyone would find it offensive. Of course, if anyone asked me not to use such a term in reference to them, I wouldn't think twice about stopping.
