This seems the new model for television. Handmaid's Tale is among the first to go back into production, everyone yoked to the set and location, no travel to and from. Bradley Whitford commented in an interview over the weekend. It's the only way they can resume. One wonders what version of this -- already tried with the much discussed Godspell -- will inform earliest theater, post pandemic. Can a quarantined cast perform for a variety of audiences? If there's enough space?

Unlike Godspell in the Berkshires...

I'm guessing the final result of this film will give no indication of masks or even social distancing in the staging even if they were employed in the shooting. It will probably be very slick and highly edited with lots of camera angles and takes. And probably far more interesting than it ever was on stage.

Maybe tweaks in previews aren't so big anymore, but I wonder if putting it out there, in a permanent record, after seeing nine previews is premature (not saying they really had a choice, except to not do it).

I believe they've done some work on the show between the last preview in front of an audience and when the cameras start rolling. (But is this all that different from releasing a concept album, or even a cast album recorded before previews? Or, for that matter, the film of Love Never Dies, which preserves a version of a show that was subsequently rewritten?)

So this isnt like flying over sunset that really had no audience tryout. And Scarlett pimpernel famously revised the show during the broadway run a year or so after opening.

There were 2 very different versions of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Version #1 ran over 5 months but never officially opened. I saw both. I found #2 pretty enjoyable.

I saw the original version of Pimpernel on Broadway. The book was a little clunky, but it's still my favorite Wildhorn show, especially the score.

But Spider-Man V1 didn’t actually open.

I only saw the first version. I still think it should have been a 90 minute show. After the battle above the audience occurred, there was really nothing compelling to keep the show going.

Some of my New York friends kept telling me, "Don't go, it's terrible", regarding version #1. But after 5 months, I had to see for myself what it was like before it was revised. I bought a $30 rush ticket, which was easy to get, and was seated on the main floor in something like the 15th row or so. Act 1 was pretty good, but I couldn't figure out exactly what was going on in Act 2. Even though it never officially opened, a lot of critics finally reviewed it.

The actors at the stage door told me some pretty funny stuff.

I think it's bigger than a concept album. If you want to compare it to Love Never Dies ...
