Also, my experience with the few non-binary people I know is that they are usually forgiving if "he" or "she" get used instead of "they" because they understand that even for people in the know, it can take time to adjust to remembering "they" instead of instinctually going for he or she. So it could be that Sara recognizes that as well.

I also find that even those very sensitive to gender issues will still stick to older habits, for instance, addressing a mixed-gender group as "guys." It takes a lot to break old habits, even when we're aware of the issues.
