| I have some out-of-town friends who have been asking me repeatedly when do I think Broadway will start to return. They know I live in the area and even though I’ve told him I have no inside information my gut feeling for what it’s worth would probably be next summer the earliest. Curious what others feel. Thanks. | |

| As soon as there is an audience for it as we have been below 1% infection rate for 2 months.....Last night I dreamt I had a TDF ticket for Aladdin to be done in a smaller theater with social distancing......so you can see where my head is. | |

| With much of 5th Avenue boarded up, and a new video of a man raping a woman on a NYC subway platform at 11:00 in the morning all over the net, even if Covid 19 were to have a cure tomorrow, NYC has much recovering to do before most Americans will feel safe returning. I predict national tours will pick up the slack around the country by focusing on stops where the cities are not in flames. That in addition to local regional and even community theater productions will return before Broadway opens up. It's really sad. | |

| I had thought we were all friends and enthusiasts of Broadway here. We hardly need to spread fear and mistrust. There are cafes and parks open all over NYC. People ride their bikes, go shopping, live their lives with most respecting each other by wearing masks. Museums will be opening this month. New York’s demise has been predicted countless times before. Spread your bad tidings elsewhere. | |

| Teacher64 have you stepped in to replace Summertheater as the resident doomsday prophet? Your posts seem nearly identical to his. All we need is for you to start complaining about 8:00 curtain times and no late seating. P.S. Where are these cities that are "in flames"? |

| P.S. Where are these cities that are "in flames"? Thank you. That's two of us now that have asked that question, and lo and behold, no answers from Teacher64. Very telling. All That Chat is no place for conspiracy theories - unless perhaps for rumors about the next Broadway production of Mame. ;-) But very seriously, though - I'd like to see some accountability on Teacher64's part. I'm not holding my breath, though. |

| Realistically, forums like AllThatChat have been targeted all across the USA with false information to stir up division and influence the presidential election. There's no reason to imagine that it couldn't happen here, and even though we're terrific at self-policing, i do think TBAdmin should make it easy for us to flag posts for removal. See today's news re: the activities of the Internet Research Agency. And admin -- it's been so long since many of us agreed to terms, but if there's nothing within the TOS that forbids posts that spread false news (although I think there is), maybe that's a valuable thing to include? - GMB |

| He's right - there are many stores closed/boarded up, and yes - there is a video about a rape in the subway being widely circulated on the internet. Does this paint a complete picture of NY? No. I live here and while it's certainly different, it's not dead by any means. But he's right - the impression that tourists may be getting about NYC is not good and we will have to work to overcome that before we can get those buses of grey-hairs back in filling the seats and paying the bills. |

| The trouble is a disparity between one reality - shootings are up by 50% this year - and another reality - New York has been experiencing its lowest levels of violent crime in nearly 70 years. So it's very easy for propagandists to focus on the first reality, and then build a nightmare story out of that, rather than attempt to educate people through a nuanced portrait that accounts for multiple facts. | |

| There are NO cities in flames. There are protests in a couple square blocks of downtown Portland, because the police keep murdering people. Some fires are set in garbage cans, There are protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, population 100,000, because of police shooting a man in the back 7 times from point blank range. There have been some fires set. Why alt right folk shoot unarmed protestors. So - the US is not in flames. | |

| Unfortunately, this particular derangement, likely fed by right-wing propaganda, reflects a large portion of our country, specifically the people (white and rural) that our political system overly rewards with representation at the federal level. | |

| pushing aside for the moment the political aspect for the moment, and looking on the bright side, it happens that this same group is also very under-represented among NYC tourists and even more so NY theatre. I have a friend from a small rural county in a blood red state. Her parents come to visit once a year. Her mother told me several years ago that her friends and family are aghast that they would go to NYC (even more so that their daughter lives here!) and that she literally does not know another person who has ever been to New York. So the bottom line is that we don't need them or want them, which of course does not alter the pernicious effect of the fake news apparatus. | |

| If it's so unsafe, how about you stay out of NYC then, Teacher64. And while you're at it you can go talk about how much you loved A Christmas Story: The Musical & how you figured out the twist to Next To Normal ad nauseam on some other regional board for a city that's hopefully not "in flames." |

| Teacher64's post is incendiary, anecdotal evidence to back up bias, cribbed from police blotter. I've been a New Yorker since 1979. It's a city. An enormous one. It endures cycles of city-specific challenges. It's also resilient as few places on the globe are. To prognosticate a dark future is ahistorical. New York City is a metaphor: a testament to survival. Broadway is woven into its DNA, and Broadway will be back. | |

| You forgot to mention that the post was almost entirely fake news. Get ready for a lot more of this for the next 2 months; this is the false narrative of one of our presidential candidates. PS: I walked 5th Avenue last week with a friend, Central Park to Washington Square. "Boarded up" is not what I saw. The only address I came upon that seemed besieged was 725 5th Avenue. But of course I very much doubt that Teacher64 has been in NY in 6 months or more, and premumably would be treated as a pariah if they did show up. The key word in your post is "resilient." That is the quintessential characteristic of New York. The only quibble I have is that it is the theatre, not just Broadway, that is woven in our DNA. |

| The only correct answer is no one knows, of course, but that's no fun. I started saying Fall '21 in about April '20, not knowing anything but surprisingly I am not sure I am any smarter now. The definition is important because some silly rich person(s) will do something as soon as it is legal to do so. But if you mean something that looks like a recovering industry, then I can't imagine much before my original guess. Let me ask this: Do you think that tourist (domestic and foreign) hordes will have returned by next summer? Because that is the sine qua non of Broadway even roughly looking like it did in 2019. (And my guess is that it won't, ever, which may not be a bad thing.) |

| Nobody knows when and any speculation now is as useless as it was months ago. I feel it's obvious common sense for the shows to remain temporarily closed than it would be to open, not at least break even with ticket sales and then close permanently. I believe what few shows survive this mess will get one chance to come back and it's better to wait as long as feasible to attempt to open again. | |
