I saw the reading but hadn’t seen it onstage. I wasn’t as taken as Brantley was with the play—though I’ll admit I somehow (?) missed a key piece of stage direction/narration at the very top that would have been impossible to overlook onstage. (The first image is of a man soaked in blood. I didn’t catch that part, so much of the suspense of that went over my head.) I only learned about it in reading the review in the Times later.

That minor point aside, I thought it was a bit of a wallow in the seamy, dark side of these characters (which is fine), but ultimately without much of a point or a reason (which is not). I thought all the naturalistic dunk in despair added up to very little.

The performances were excellent, particularly those of Ed Harris and Bill Pullman.
