| The opening number -- not especially winning anyway -- could feel arch on screen, the self-awareness of the characters singing mulled thoughts as they go about chores, at least in my memory of the show. But it has parts for two stars, Adams (who sings nicely) and Moore (who can probably pull it off). One of my issues with the musical is how much Evan carries the score. So one challenge will be making the whole piece feel fully musicalized. Otherwise, it's a scripted story that pauses more often than not for the Platt vocals (he sings in 12 numbers; 7-8 are solos or songs he carries). Maybe that's fine, but it's not Funny Girl. |
