The time frame of the '49 film and the Sunset Blvd musical is very specifically 1948. No Hollywood actress back then who was Close's age would ever have been cast in that role. The only actress of that era who was still playing leads in her 70's (that I can think of) was Ethel Barrymore, who played aristocratic dowagers whose age matched her own.

Close is a brilliant stage and film actress. I caught her performance in the 2017 revival at the Palace. She pulled it off believably on stage, and I'm glad I saw it. However, she's also no fool. She knows how the system works. My guess is she's angling for something like a Netflix production with a reasonable budget that would at least provide the opportunity to preserve her performance, which is apparently very important to her.

I can't imagine a big budget, elaborate musical film version (like the $80--$100 million Cats) ever happening with her as Norma.
