I've heard a few interpretations over the years but the one that sticks in my head is the version that originated in vaudeville/music hall days where a "leg" is the side curtain (still called "legs" by crew).
To "break" a "leg" meant "to make it onstage", which was never a guarantee depending on one's placement on the bill. So "breaking a leg" came to mean "good fortune",
As its original meaning faded it became a more vague and universal expression. I have heard it used in non-theatrical settings quite often. |
