I'm partial to the explanation that curtains were original weighted down with wooden rods sewn into the bottom, a la chair or table legs. And that if a performance was so enthusiastically received that the curtain was pulled up and smashed down numerous times, it would break those legs in the curtain.
Of course, why you would be sewing table legs into a curtain in the first place isn't really covered in this description... |
