Tangentially related - I was told that “merde” began as a wish for a successful performance because of ACTUAL merde!
According to the lore I was told - if the theater or opera house had a large audience, there would be a higher number of horse-drawn carriages pulling to the front of the building. If your performance went well, the higher likelihood that you would step in horse droppings on your way to/ from the the theater. More happy audience members = more MERDE! |
