In vaudeville at least, being on the bill meant you were going on. Performances were continuous and the performers were all paid, so they were guaranteed to go on.
My favorite story is that in Elizabethan theaters the groundlings would lean on the stage and drool when engrossed in the action. The wet drool on the deck was a hazzard and caused the most enthralling actors to slip and ....break their legs. |
