Standing up for herself? I guess, when it comes to money.
But a lot happens between out of town and Broadway. Songs are replaced or written out altogether. Characters, too. And what if she wasn’t what they were looking for, once it got in front of an audience? Sometimes, great casting ideas fall apart once they’re up and running. LuPone as Norma Desmond comes immediately to mind. Not what the creatives were looking for, once it got in front of an audience. The notion that Buckley didn’t get a Broadway guarantee speaks more to the creatives & producers and their work in progress and process than it does any performer “standing up for” themselves.
All that said, Ms. Buckley’s medley with the Boys Choir of Harlem at the Carnegie Hall Sondheim concert all those years ago (with Buckley singing a song from Into The Woods, yet) remains the highlight. Absolutely gorgeous. |
