| Never read the book, or saw the play, but the movie version is hit and miss. It ALMOST goes there, then pulls WAY back. It is dreadfully stagy. The cop-out curtain call at the end is unforgivable. I can forgive them changing the outcome of the story, given the times (and it is done rather well) but that "let's hear from our wonderful cast" thing is just pathetic. Yuck. The film version, with all its flaws, would be more highly regarded without the curtain call coda. It's well-acted for the most part (cough Nancy Kelly robbing Marilyn Monroe of that Oscar slot). Oh well it was 1956, the era the POTUS seems to exist in. Until next week, hopefully. |
