| Nancy Kelly really must have been quite effective in the theater, and she won a Tony for it. The director could have reined her in a bit, but it still works, because the mother is in such a terrible position, wanting to protect her daughter and also realizing what her daughter might be, then who she really is and what she is capable of doing. Some of the text the mother has to speak is also written more for the theater, as they are really things she would be thinking to herself when she is alone, not verbalizing -- but again, in a theater, that's a time-honored device. The rest of the cast is terrific with Patty McCormack truly scary, and Eileen Heckart so moving and heartbreaking, so believably tragic in her scenes, which the film otherwise has some measures of camp and horror operating in the piece. Yes, the (pre-curtain calls) ending was changed in accordance with the censors, and I believe the curtain call was also at the behest of them as well, as little girls behaving that way in the 1950s America was just so out-there back then; they wanted to reassure audiences that, hey, it's over, it was make believe. I find the movie pretty riveting to watch and a lot of fun, actually. | |
