You definitely are a Scorsese loyalist (as well as a Minnelli one). Of course, there's nothing wrong with that. However, though any number of his greatest films could be judged a masterpiece, I don't think New York, New York has ever been considered one of them.

Nevertheless, Liza is quite good -- she knock's the title song out of the park -- and, of course, Kander & Ebb's contribution to the film is one of the attributes that make the film (at least) watchable (if not memorable). I've always found it gratifying that it took 3 Tony-winning Broadway veterans to make one of a great film director's least noteworthy efforts worth checking out.
